Lower School Counseling

The lower school years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-confidence and feelings of competence as learners. They are beginning to develop communication and life skills as well as character values.

Lower school counseling helps students develop these important life skills by providing academic support, education on understanding self and others, and tools to foster effective communication and social skills.

As the lower school counselor at Trinity, I visit the  classrooms to offer lessons on affective issues. Puppets, role-playing, and other educational materials are used to teach study skills, cooperation, and respect for others and help to develop social skills and self-confidence. Students have the opportunity to request one-on-one time as needed and I am also available to meet with parents to discuss student-related issues.

In addition to guidance classes, I am also in charge of the academic and achievement testing in the lower school. In early April, grades kindergarten through fifth grades partake in the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The ITBS is a group-administered achievement test battery that provides a comprehensive assessment of student progress in the basic skills. Students’ scores yield reliable and comprehensive information about the development of their skills and about their ability to think critically.

It is a blessing to work with Trinity students, and I enjoy spending time with them in and out of the classroom. I am also here to work with parents if needed, so feel free to call me at 213-2138.
