Lower School First Grade

Trinity's first grade program provides a curriculum that challenges as well as nurtures our little ones. The traditional subjects provide a foundational overview of the future requirements of our students.

Our curriculum in reading places emphasis on phonetic decoding of words in context to improve fluency. Comprehension is our goal. This is done in a fun and creative way using many interesting stories with various genres, crafts, and other activities. Reading also includes spelling of high frequency words, grammar, and story structure which helps in our designed writing program. Children are exposed to different genres of writing techniques. School published works can be viewed throughout the year in our rooms and halls.

Math begins with numerous and various manipulatives to make concepts concrete. The curriculum then moves towards memorization of basic addition and subtraction facts. Children not only learn the facts but the "why" of the facts. Foundational algebra and geometry concepts are also presented.

In the science area, our first graders experience classroom experiments to reinforce the lesson. Science includes the biological and physical areas. These studies help our little ones understand the world around them. Foundational "real" science vocabulary is learned to aid the children in their future exploration of this subject.

The social studies area in first grade includes history and geography. This helps the children understand why our country is the nation it is and to appreciate other cultures. Map skills help them understand their place on the giant ball we call Earth.

Trinity truly cares about the whole child. Our Bible curriculum touches the heart of the child. The study includes: Old Testament patriarchs, the life of Christ on Earth, the early church, and each of our responsibilities toward building the kingdom. Children memorize a Bible verse each week to apply to their life skills. First grade gives children ample opportunities to minister to those around them using the principles in their Bible study. Our goal is to present Godly principles that children will use in their future to fulfill His plan for their life.
