Lower School Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten program at Trinity is one that not only involves a curriculum that incorporates Phonics and sight based learning, but many hands on activities as well. We provide the foundation in reading and math that ultimately leads to students’ confidence and success in the classroom.
In the area of reading, children begin by learning to identify letters and sounds. The vowels and their sounds are introduced first, followed by consonants. The children then learn to “blend” these sounds together in order to sound out words. Sight words are also introduced to the children in a variety of ways. Children are not only encouraged to identify and sound out words through reading activities, but by writing as well. Various stories and themes incorporated into the reading program and creative writing and drawing are an important part of this process.
The math curriculum allows children to learn the basics needed to form a solid foundation in this area. Children begin by working with patterning and graphing. Children use a variety of manipulatives to help establish concrete concepts in the area of numbers, counting, addition and subtraction. Through the course of the year, children will also learn to identify coins along with their amounts. Basic counting by 5’s and 10’s to 100 is also part of the curriculum. Learning the parts of a clock along with telling time on the hour and half hour is done by using many hands on activities. Children also use a variety of manipulatives to help establish concrete concepts in the area of addition and subtraction.
Thematic units are a major part of the Kindergarten curriculum. Our units during the first semester include Home and family, Woodland Animals, and our play “The Joy of Christmas.” During the second semester, we study Animals in the Winter, Rain Forest, Insects, The Farm, and Ocean Life. We conclude the year with a Luau. The units are full of fun activities, stories and field trips.
The children take part in may other courses such as music and science lab that are so important to nurturing the “whole child.”
As a result of all these parts working together, Trinity helps establish and reach goals that lead to a successful future.
