Lower School Second Grade

Second grade classes at Trinity work together to promote Christian values and principles inside and outside the classroom. Everyday Bible study is an important part of our daily routine. The Bible lessons that are taught focus on the life of Jesus and the heroes of the Bible plus the character traits they exhibit. Daily application is discussed and memorization of scripture is emphasized.

Reading is taught in many forms. Oral reading in small groups is a major part of the curriculum. Sustained silent reading, skills work, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension questions are all part of the reading program. Supplemental reading and the study of novels are included. Chapter books are read for book reports which consist of an oral report, a written report, a dress-up report, and an accordion folder report.

Mastery of addition and subtraction facts to the sum of 18 is the main focus in Math. Students learn to add and subtract 2-digit and 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Place value is stressed and use of manipulatives help teach this concept. Clue words are taught to help solve word problems. Graphs and tables, telling time, money, measurement, fractions, and beginning multiplication are all covered in our math curriculum.

In Language, students are taught how to use nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns in sentences. Forms of writing such as creative story writing, paragraphwriting, poetry, book reports, journal writing, and letter writing are emphasized. Correct punctuation, capitalization, and complete sentence structure are skills which are taught and practiced. Cursive writing is introduced second semester. Spelling words are given each week and used in sentences or paragraphs. Knowledge of these words are tested through oral tests and dictation.

The Science curriculum consists of life science, earth science, and physical science. Studies of plants, animals, habitats, the human body, space, weather, earth’s resources, energy, and matter are subjects that interest our students. Projects are added to enrich these studies.

We begin our Social Studies units with a study of family ties. This is a boost to our Grandparents’ Day that second grade has each year in the fall. Grandparents come throughout the week before this event to share stories and read books to the classes. Second graders perform through songs and poems for the grandparents on this day. Other units that are studied include those about Earth, the working world, America’s past, famous Americans, and celebrations around the world. Map skills are taught and students learn the placement of the fifty states on a map. State reports are given which include the state’s resources, population, chief products, symbols, places to visit, and interesting events.

Field trips are taken to enrich the curriculum. Trips to the planetarium, the Archives to learn about Indians, the veterinary clinic, and a play about a novel we read help make learning fun!
