Instrumental Music
Lower School Instrumental Music
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade meet for thirty minutes per week for instrumental music. The program is based on the Orff approach to music education, as taught by German composer, Carl Orff.
A music educator pointed out that “The Orff approach combines the love of sound, love of making music, and the need to be appreciated in such a way that children can participate in their own musical education and personal growth. The ultimate aim of Orff’s approach to music is the enrichment of students’ lives through the development of their inherent musicality.” This is one of the reasons this approach is used in teaching instrumental music. It lets the child discover their God given talents in a wonderful way.
We begin with the most elemental of concepts, the steady beat, and progress from there sequentially. The primary instruments used are those developed by Carl Orff, the xylophones, metalophones, glockenspiels, along with unpitched percussion.
There is an ancient proverb: Tell me, I forget, show me, I remember, involve me, I understand. We try to involve the children in the music so they will understand.
