About the Learning Specialists

Elementary Learning Specialists

The lower school learning specialist is available at Trinity to support students needing minimal assistance in order to become more effective learners. With a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, no academic work is altered. However, this fee-based service provides an opportunity for students to acquire their own compensatory strategies which will allow them to compliment their individual learning needs and improve their academic performance in the classroom. Additionally, the learning specialist aids parents by providing resources when requested and helps to attain outside professional assistance if needed. A primary goal of the learning specialist is to foster the academic growth of children with various learning styles while cooperating with parents and teachers. Partnered with strong parental support, the learning specialist works to promote self-confidence and self-advocacy, skills which are necessary for success in a college preparatory environment.

Consideration for working with the learning specialist is based upon teacher recommendation in addition to recommendations that have evolved from professionally administered batteries of tests. Students in a group of no more than three can see the learning specialist in thirty-minute sessions from one to four times each week. In order to ensure a more successful learning experience, the learning specialist works with students to build self-confidence; apply effective study, organization, and test taking skills; and assimilate course content. Students’ class work is utilized during sessions as an opportunity to teach a variety of learning strategies, while additionally allowing students to practice needed skills on a more intense level with instruction specifically tailored to their learning style. With time and maturity, mastery of these habits and skills can equip students for continued success in the upper school.

In order to ensure that parents are actively informed of their child’s progress, the learning specialist generates an informal report every three to six weeks which includes strategies implemented during the student’s sessions. The report also includes suggestions for parents that can help to facilitate enhanced learning opportunities at home. The report reinforces that one of the most integral parts of helping a child be successful is for the parents to provide additional support at home!

The web pages provided focus on a variety of learning styles and techniques as well as give information on different types of learning difficulties.
