Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition

12th Grade

Prerequisites: See general prerequisites on p. 9
90th percentile and above on verbal PSAT
This course is designed for students who are capable of doing college-level work in English while they are in secondary school, and who are willing to devote the energy necessary to complete a course more rigorous and demanding than other high school English courses designed for the college-bound student. This course emphasizes critical reading of imaginative and discursive literature, the analysis and evaluation of the literature, and writing appropriately for different occasions. Because of the heavy reading requirements for AP English, the AP student can expect to have up to l 1/2 hours of homework every night, to have reading assignments during school vacations, and to buy up to twenty paperback books during the course of the year. Although the reading and composition requirements for AP English are challenging, the course offers a stimulating experience for the highly motivated and academically talented student.
