Upper School Français

French I

10th, 11th, & 12th Grade

This course introduces the student to French language and culture; it develops elementary proficiency in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The course work includes grammatical structures, vocabulary, basic conversational idioms, and a study of French customs, everyday life, and civilization.

French II

10th, 11th, & 12th Grade

Prerequisite: Student must have completed French I
French II provides a more in-depth study of grammar, conversation, culture, and reading. Students read a novel by a major French author as an introduction to French literature.

French III

Prerequisite: Student must have completed French II
French III involves a further study of grammar, reading, writing, and conversation, and a study of the major regions of France and some French-speaking countries. Second semester the students read a short novel in French.

French IV

Prerequisite: Student must have completed French III
This course includes a study of advanced French grammar, a chronological survey of French history, readings in French literature (at least four major works), more variety in types of writing, and conversation.

French V

Prerequisite: Student must have completed French IV
French V is an in-depth study of composition, conversation, and literature in preparation for the AP French language exam. Conversation and composition focus on current events in France. This course is available only for students who transfer from a school on a different track.

Only two sections of each 1st year foreign language course will be offered each year.
