Upper School Latin
Latin I
10th, 11th, & 12th Grade
Latin increases one’s understanding of the English language. It is an essential foundation for language courses and for the various sciences. Latin I is a study of the fundamentals of Latin grammar and syntax with emphasis placed on developing translation skills. Selected topics pertaining to Roman civilization are discussed.
Latin II
10th, 11th, & 12th Grade
Prerequisite: The student must have completed Latin I
Latin II provides a review of grammar, and selections from Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War, Mythology, and the Latin Vulgate. Students are given an opportunity to read extended passages from various Roman authors.
Latin III
Prerequisite: The student must have completed Latin II
Selected readings from various prominent authors of Latin stories, myths, and fables comprise the foundation of this course. Emphasis is placed on reading comprehension.
Latin IV
Prerequisite: The student must have completed Latin III
This course provides a study of Latin poetry based on the readings of the poems of Horace and Catullus. Emphasis is placed on the mechanics of translation and details of Roman civilization during the Augustan Era.
