Upper School Español
Spanish I
10th, 11th, & 12th Grade
Spanish I offers the opportunity to build a foundation for communicative competence by learning vocabulary and grammar in context. Communication includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing; therefore, all of these areas will be emphasized. As an integral part of this language study, Hispanic culture and customs will be discussed.
Spanish II
10th, 11th, & 12th Grade
This course offers a more in-depth study of grammar, reading, writing, and culture. Further opportunities for oral expression and listening comprehension will be available as students move toward fluency. The study of culture in this course includes information and discussion in the areas of history, geography, famous personalities, art, music, literature, and daily customs.
Spanish III
Spanish III provides a review of all fundamentals of Spanish I and II and emphasizes mastery of the language. This course offers a study of advanced grammar, speaking, reading, and writing; the focus is on real-life situations. Synthesis and self-expression are fostered through the use of communicative activities. The study of culture is woven into the different aspects of the course.
Spanish IV
Spanish IV includes a study of advanced Spanish grammar and stresses vocabulary building, speaking, and writing. The Spanish literature read and discussed will include the novel Don Quijote.
Spanish V
Prerequisite: The student must have completed Spanish IV
This course prepares the student for the AP Spanish language exam. An in-depth study of literature and composition in Spanish is provided. This course is available only for students who transfer from a school on a different track.
