Trinity Presbyterian School’s 4th Grade Champions, Alabama’s New State Cookie

Montgomery, AL — In a delightful blend of education, creativity, and state pride, Trinity Presbyterian School’s fourth-grade class has made history—literally—by helping create the official state cookie of Alabama.

While studying Alabama history, the students discovered something surprising: Alabama had no official state cookie. Inspired to take action, the class put their new knowledge to work, combining civics with confectionery.

With help from Trinity’s senior government class, who guided them through the legislative process, the fourth graders proposed and developed a cookie recipe that would represent the spirit and sweetness of the Heart of Dixie.

After thoughtful debate, enthusiastic baking, and plenty of taste testing, the perfect cookie was born. The students didn’t stop there—they moved their idea forward just like any real bill. With the support of local legislators and guidance from their older peers, their proposal went before the Alabama Legislature.

In a rare show of full bipartisan support, the bill passed unanimously through both the Alabama House of Representatives and the Senate. On June 2, 2023, Governor Kay Ivey signed the bill into law, officially declaring the treat as the state cookie of Alabama.
“Sweet Home Alabama just got a little sweeter,” said Governor Ivey as she signed the legislation into law.

This initiative stands as a proud example of hands-on learning at Trinity Presbyterian School—showing how students of all ages can engage with government, take initiative, and make a lasting impact on their state.
