Visual Arts Program | Trinity Presbyterian School

Visual Arts

Trinity’s Visual Arts program encourages students to explore their creativity while building a strong foundation in artistic techniques and design. From early learners to upper school students, the program grows with each child—helping them discover their unique perspective and express themselves with confidence.

Students engage with a variety of materials and methods, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, digital media, and advanced options like AP Art. With both two-dimensional and three-dimensional experiences, the program offers a rich and varied environment where students are challenged to think critically, work skillfully, and create with purpose—all while reflecting the beauty of the world God has made.

Visual Arts Progression

At Trinity, visual arts instruction is thoughtfully designed to grow with students throughout each stage of their academic journey, combining skill development with creative exploration and a Christian worldview.

K3–5th Grade
Students attend visual arts classes once a week, where they build foundational skills, explore creativity, and learn essential art concepts and techniques through hands-on projects.
6th Grade
As part of a nine-week Fine Arts rotation, students are introduced to the elements of art and principles of design with a focus on traditional drawing techniques. This rotation allows them to experience various artistic disciplines before selecting a more focused path in later grades.
7th–8th Grade
Students may enroll in semester-long visual arts courses that continue to build on their foundational skills. Seventh grade focuses on refining drawing techniques and introducing basic painting, while eighth grade expands to include a variety of media such as painting, drawing, and sculpture.
9th–12th Grade

Upper School students choose from a series of progressive visual arts electives based on their interests and experience. Courses include:

  • Art I (Intro to Art) – foundational drawing and painting techniques, integrating biblical principles
  • Art II (Intermediate Art) – continued skill development and spiritual reflection through art
  • Art III (Advanced Art) – development of personal style and a themed portfolio
  • AP Studio Art – college-level coursework with portfolio submission in Drawing, 2-D, or 3-D Design

Each course encourages students to use their artistic gifts to glorify God, develop their creative voice, and produce meaningful, high-quality work.

Upper School Visual Arts

Art I – Introduction to Art

Grades 9–12

This introductory course explores the beauty, creativity, and craftsmanship involved in visual art, while also examining the deeper spiritual and philosophical aspects of art through a Christian worldview. Students will learn foundational techniques in drawing and painting, reflecting on how art serves as a form of worship, expression, and storytelling within the Christian faith. Biblical principles of creativity, beauty, and purpose are integrated throughout the course, encouraging students to glorify God and reflect His image through their work.

Students are required to purchase the book Art for God’s Sake and their own personal paintbrushes.

Art II – Intermediate Art

Grades 10–12

Building upon the foundations of Art I, this course continues to cultivate students' artistic skills and spiritual understanding. Students will further develop their techniques in drawing and painting, while considering how art can be used to communicate truth, inspire worship, and express God's creativity. The course reinforces a biblical perspective on the role of art and encourages students to explore their creative identity in Christ.

Students are required to purchase the book Art for God’s Sake and their own personal paintbrushes.

Art III – Advanced Art

Grades 11–12

Art III challenges students to deepen their artistic practice through research, experimentation, and skill refinement in drawing, painting, and mixed media. Emphasis is placed on developing a personal artistic style and creating a cohesive body of work—eight finished pieces centered around a chosen theme. Students will explore a wider variety of materials and techniques while reflecting on art as worship and as a reflection of God's design. Biblical principles of creativity, beauty, and purpose are woven throughout the course.

Students are required to purchase the book Art for God’s Sake and their own personal paintbrushes.

AP Studio Art (Drawing, 2-D Design, or 3-D Design)

Grade 12

AP Studio Art provides an opportunity for highly motivated students to pursue college-level work in a studio environment. Rather than a written exam, students submit a portfolio in May, demonstrating technical skill, conceptual depth, and personal vision. The College Board offers three AP Art portfolios: Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design. Each portfolio is divided into three sections—Sustained Investigation, Selected Works, and Range of Approaches—challenging students to show a comprehensive understanding of visual methods and creative problem-solving.

This course is ideal for students preparing for further study in the visual arts.
